Free Trade Is The Policy Of Unrestricted Purchasing And...
Free trade is the policy of unrestricted purchasing and selling of goods between nations without the imposition of barriers, such as tariffs and quotas. For example, if an American company wanted to import a good to Canada, they would be able to do so free of import taxes. This is as a result of NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement, which allows free trade between Canada, the United States, and Mexico. This is done in order to promote international trade between the different zones. The theory of free trade is that, without the increase in transport cost that comes from tariffs, imported goods are less expensive. This means, for a country such as the United States of America, that consumer prices should drop while exports should increase, since the price to export has lessened considerably. The most common counter to this idea, however, is the fact that there are some nations, such as China, that lack the worker protections that are in place in the United States. This means that manufacturing costs are far cheaper in some foreign nations. As a result, American workers, being unable to compete with the low wages being paid to workers in other countries, are forced into unemployment by outsourcing. This, in theory, leads to a weakened middle class whose purchasing power is severely diminished. This has come to the forefront of recent politics, given the positions of various presidential candidates on this important issue.
